How to transcribe an OGG voice note

  1. 1. Add your file. Drop an OGG or Opus file on the box above, or click it to pick one from your device.
  2. 2. Press Transcribe. The first time, the speech model downloads to your browser and is saved for next time. Then the text shows up in the editor.
  3. 3. Copy or export. Fix anything that looks off, then copy the text or download it as TXT, PDF, Word, SRT or VTT.

Transcribe an OGG or Opus file

OGG is a container for audio. Inside it is usually Vorbis or Opus. TextFromAudio takes .ogg and .opus files and returns the words as text. Drop the file in, press Transcribe, and edit the transcript in the page.

The free mode has no limits: no cap on file length, number of files or languages. It uses lighter speech models, so it is a little slower and less accurate than Pro.

Voice messages from chat apps

Most people who search for OGG to text have a voice message they would rather read.

WhatsApp. Voice messages are Opus files. Save or export the message to your device, then choose the file here.

Telegram. Voice messages are OGG files. Save the message to your device and drop it in.

Other chat apps and game voice. Many use Opus too, so the same steps work.

Voice messages are short and recorded close to the microphone, which is the easy case for a transcriber. A message in a noisy street or on speakerphone will have more mistakes.

If a file won't open

OGG and Opus support depends on the browser, because the browser has to decode the audio. Use a current Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer if a file is refused. If the file itself is damaged, we say so instead of returning a blank transcript.

Other places OGG shows up

OGG is also common in open-source software, game audio and some recorders and podcast feeds. All of these work the same way.

Edit and export

Fix names and numbers in the editor, switch timestamps on to see where each line starts, and click a line to play the audio from that point. Copy the text or download TXT, PDF, Word, SRT or VTT. The Translate button (Pro) is handy for a voice message in a language you do not speak.

Saved as another type? See voice memo to text, MP3 to text or WAV to text.

FAQ

What is an OGG file, and what about Opus?

OGG is a container for audio, most often Vorbis or Opus. A .ogg file and a .opus file are both fine here, and the file is transcribed the same way.

Can I transcribe a WhatsApp or Telegram voice message?

Yes. WhatsApp voice messages are Opus files and Telegram voice messages are OGG. Save or export the voice message to your device first, then choose that file here.

My OGG file won't open. What can I do?

OGG and Opus support depends on your browser. Try a current version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer. If the file is damaged, we'll tell you.

Is OGG to text free?

Yes. No sign-up, no watermark, and no cap on length, number of files or languages. The free mode uses lighter speech models, so it is a bit slower and less accurate than Pro.

Is my voice message uploaded?

Not in the free mode. The speech model runs in your browser, on your own device, so a private voice message stays on it. In Pro, your file is processed on our servers and deleted automatically afterwards.
